I am a Proud Squid with 7 #newlens on #squidoo in July!
What are your #kids doing this #summer - get ideas on #squidoo @ http://www.squidoo.com/ideas-for-kids-activities
Here in Kentucky summer vacation is winding down but some folks still have a month to go. What are your kids doing with their summer vacation?
Great #book for #kids & #writing prompt on #squidoo http://www.squidoo.com/thehellogoodbyewindow
The Hello, Goodbye Window has resided on my son's bookshelf for years. I think we bought the book when he was in kindergarten. We fell in love with it from the first. It is just a delightful, heart-warming and fun story that children love. We enjoyed reading it many times. Then as Noah became a reader himself he found this book easily accessible. When Noah was in third grade we found this book a great springboard for writing. This summer I also used it with my adult writing students.
What can you do with this book?
Find the key to #happiness on #squidoo @ http://www.squidoo.com/motivationalinspirations
The most important key to your personal happiness is determining that you will be happy. For many people, their personal happiness is not a priority in their life. Too often, we put the happiness of others before our own. While this may please our children, spouse, or boss, this is not the path to happiness. This dos not mean you should make yourself happy at the expense of others, but you must remember that the reverse should also not be true -- your happiness should not be sacrificed to make others happy.

Learn more about business #writing on #squidoo http://www.squidoo.com/business-writing
Many people see business writing as the type of writing you do in the business world, professional writing as people who write for a living (say like journalists or copyeditors and not to be confused with just plain writers which is the typical name given to those who write novels), and technical writers as people who translate science and technology into human language the rest of us can understand.

Emily Rodda writes great #books for #kids - http://www.squidoo.com/emilyrodda
Emily Rodda has written many books for children, including the popular Deltora Quest series, and five noves about the likable hero Rowan. The first of these, Roman of Rin, won the Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year for Younger Readers Award. A former editor, Ms. Rodda is also the best-selling author of adult mysteries under the name Jennifer Rowe. She lives in Australia.
Make your next #writing project multigenre! Learn how on #squidoo @ http://www.squidoo.com/multigenre
Multigenre essays are an effective writing assignment for students K-16 because it is more challenging and interesting to both student and teacher. It allows the writer to really be a writer and choose the genre that fits the writing task rather than forcing students to write within a very restrictive, and usually entirely false, format. It is also a way to help students create large projects by breaking the project into smaller manageable chunks.
Multigenre also can work in a number of subject areas as a way for students to review or research an unlimited number of topics.
By giving your student writers some choice and freedom you will likely receive much more than you ask for. When was the last time you had that happen with a writing assignment?

Adam Blade's Beast Quest Series offers great #books for #kids to read. Learn more on #squidoo @ http://www.squidoo.com/adamblade
The stories are engaging with characters who are good role models for young children. The magic and adventure are appealing but there is not the same element of darkness that you find in Harry Potter. There is destruction and violence but it is balanced by more hopefulness and goodness than in the Potter books.
One aspect that my son likes very much is that in order to "win" the hero does not need to kill the beasts. He only must unlock a magical collar that makes the beast "bad". Once the beast is freed then it becomes a guardian for the kingdom.

Calling all writers! Have you tried #writing a vignette?
Writing vignettes can be a great creative writing exercise or writing prompt. Write a vignette of a scene from your own life as a way to get your creative writing juices flowing for the day or simply write a vignette featuring one of the characters from your current work-in-progress. Either way you might learn something about yourself, your writing, and/or your characters that will prove useful to your writing. You do not need to use these vignettes but you should still save them as you might find an use one day!
You can also write a much longer work by connecting a series of vignettes together. it is much less daunting to write a vignette than it is to write a book so if you have ever wanted to write a book then vignettes just might be the tool that makes it happen for you.

Ways to learn the alphabet
Learning the alphabet is not difficult for most children as long as you making learning their alphabet letters fun and regularly work on the skills. There is no order to teach alphabet letters. In fact, while your child is first learning the alphabet do not worry about order at all. Teach each individual letter of the alphabet as it is much more important that the child understand the shape and sound of each letter. After they have that alphabetic principle mastered you can help them worry about the order of the alphabet letters.
http://www.squidoo.com/learningthealphabetletters
Learning The Alphabet
One of the first steps in becoming a successful reader is learning the alphabet letters. The alphabetic principle teaches that spoken language is represented by written words that are made up of varying combinations of letters, and that these letters and combinations of them make up all of the sounds in spoken language. Attaching sounds to these letters and learning to write them paves the way to successful reading and writing.
Introduce the letter by finding a word or a name that is meaningful to your child. Example: B: ball
Model the correct formation of the letter and have your child trace the letter in salt, sand, gel, fingerpaint, pudding, or shaving cream .
Point out the letter on signs and in books.
When learning the alphabet letters it is important to learn the name, shape, and sound of each letter both in order and out. Once your child has this mastered then they are on the road to becoming a reader!

Ideas For Kids Activities
My son has been on summer break for a month while my nieces and nephews only a few weeks due to the variations in school calendars in the United States. However, they both have one thing in common. They are looking for something to do to fill their summer.Read more at www.squidoo.com
I have work of my own to do this summer and cannot spend my days serving as a camp counselor or chauffeur and so we need to find things for them to do that captures their interest and challenges them enough to let me focus on my work. However, I do not want them to spend their days watching television and playing video games -- in fact my experience is that won't really occupy them for long anyway.
This lens is all about the various projects and plans we have laid to keep our kids occupied this summer.
Phonological awareness skills key to reading
Research has shown that children who begin reading instruction with sufficiently developed phonological awareness understand the instruction better, master the alphabetic principle faster and learn to read quite easily.
Children who will later be identified as being dyslexic often do not have phonological awareness skills. Teaching these skills has been shown in research to prevent the occurrence of dyslexia in many children.
