What is a vignette?

A vignette can be used by writers, scholars, and artists in many walks of life as a way to focus in on a particular character, issue, or moment. A vignette is a "snapshot" of a particular moment that can help the writer come to terms with a personal or professional issue or illustrate that moment for others to learn from. Vignettes

A vignette is similar to anecdote but an anecdote is often short and focused on illustrating a simple message while a vignette is more detailed and layered. A vignette is a fully stand-alone short story while an anecdote usually needs some setup or explanation to serve its purpose.

Adam Blade's Beast Quest Series 8

If you have a young reader who enjoys reading about magic and adventure then you simply must introduce them to Adam Blade's Beast Quest series. These are great books for boys and girls and are a fun book series for young readers to sink their teeth into. While he loves all of the Beast Quest series, this series is especially near and dear to my 11-year-old son's heart as he is currently obsessed with pirates (we blame Pirates of the Caribbean).

There are heroes and villains plus wizards and magical beasts. Each story (and each quest) is an epic adventure pitting good versus evil and playing up the importance of friendship and love and many other positive values.

Phonological awareness skills key to reading success

Research has shown that children who begin reading instruction with sufficiently developed phonological awareness understand the instruction better, master the alphabetic principle faster and learn to read quite easily.

Children who will later be identified as being dyslexic often do not have phonological awareness skills. Teaching these skills has been shown in research to prevent the occurrence of dyslexia in many children. Accordingly, many school systems now follow a program of early screening for phonological awareness skills.

No area of reading research has gained as much attention over the past two decades as phonological awareness. Perhaps the most exciting finding emanating from research on phonological awareness is that critical levels of phonological awareness can be developed through carefully planned instruction, and this development has a significant influence on children's reading and spelling achievement.

I love the romance of such a trip and think it would be amazing to see the wild life in their natural setting. I have always loved movies and documentaries about Africa.

A memo is an internal business letter

The memo is an important form of professional communication -- a sort of internal (within the organization) business letter. It is used so commonly in professional settings that it is frequently taught in college courses.

Memos are often brief (or they are supposed to be) and tend to be formal but can also be somewhat flexible in format depending on the organization and purpose. See below for a traditional memo format. Memos are usually sent within an organization and so conform to internal expectations rather than fit a universal standard for memo format. Often these are prepared to not only inform but also serve as a record of action so it may be filed permanently and/or disseminated widely even if addressed to only a few key people who are actually involved in the topic.

Do you find success or make success?

One of the truths that I find most frustrating as a teacher and a coach is that many people believe that success, in whatever field of endeavor they are currently striving, is rather like winning the lottery. In fact, it certainly seems from the evidence that they in fact believe that success is even more random because they aren't even buying a ticket. They are simply passively waiting.

Do you believe that we find success or make success?

Amplify’d from www.squidoo.com

How Do You Define Success?

I believe success is something you make. Certainly others can help you, just as others can provide obstacles, but ultimately you make your own success and your own failure.

Arnold H. Glasow said: "Success isn't a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire."

This is a very apt quote and one I believe everyone who strives to succeed should take to heart.

Learn how to be a better writer

Many struggling writers think the only way they can improve is for someone else to help them become a better writer, but in truth a good writing teacher is more of a coach or guide and knows when to get out of the writer's way. The path to better writing begins with metawriting. Even if you have the best writing teacher in the world there will come a day when you need to leave that teacher behind and write on your own. That is why good writing teachers prepare you for that day by helping you become a self-regulated writer. Key to this process is metawriting -- your intensive, thoughtful study of your own writing.

Amplify’d from www.squidoo.com

Metawriting for better writing

Metawriting, a.k.a. metadiscourse, is writing about writing. Of course the real challenge of metawriting is the fact that in order to write about writing you must also think about writing.

The purpose of metawriting is to help the writer more fully understand what happens when writing so as to better manage future writing tasks and understand the writer's individual strengths and weaknesses.

Rhythm & Rhyme are great preschool activities

Both scientists and educators are realizing that early, positive musical experience is uniquely effective in helping children achieve their full potential intellectually, artistically and emotionally.Simply using music on a regular basis with your child, including singing, listening to music, and playing instruments, can reap tremendous benefits. It is important to note that simply listening to music is not enough. Making music is more powerful for children than just listening. It is important for you to provide your child with a solid early childhood education experience that you won't have to trust to chance but it is even more important to foster a love of learning! http://www.squidoo.com/activitypreschoolsongs

Making rhythm and rhyme a part of your child's life will have a tremendous impact on your child's speech, literacy, reasoning, physical, emotional, and social development. Simply introducing your child to preschool songs, preschool poems, and nursery rhymes can have a lasting impact on the way your child learns and develops.

There are so many benefits to bringing music, rhyme, and rhythm into your young child's life that now you can understand why so many early childhood education programs emphasize music. Plus it has the added advantage of being fun for you and your child. And the best part is that there is no age threshold. You can begin working rhythm and rhyme into your child's life at birth (or even before)!

Bursitis Information

Bursitis is a form of arthritis in which the joints of the body become inflamed. In each joint, there is a bursa sac that is filled with fluid. This fluid-filled sac is what helps your joints move freely without pain. It basically prevents your bones and muscles from rubbing against each other when they move. Bursitis occurs when one of the bursa sacs become inflamed. This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as repetitive movements or a sudden injury. When the bursa sac becomes inflamed, it no longer provides the protection in your joints and, as a result, you feel pain in that joint every time you move it.

Beast Quest: Great books that boys like to read

These stories have all the standard fairy tale adventure story elements -- an evil wizard, a beleaguered kingdom in need of a champion, and a young hero plus magic, friendship, and bravery.

The stories are engaging with characters who are good role models for young children. The magic and adventure are appealing but there is not the same element of darkness that you find in Harry Potter. There is destruction and violence but it is balanced by more hopefulness and goodness than in the Potter books.

One aspect that my son likes very much is that in order to "win" the hero does not need to kill the beasts. He only must unlock a magical collar that makes the beast "bad". Once the beast is freed then it becomes a guardian for the kingdom.

Who is Adam Blade

My son has been an Adam Blade fan for years. After finishing up the Harry Potter series, we looked around for a new series and selected Blade's Beast Quest series.

This turned out to be a great choice because these are great books for boys -- really great books for children to read. We read a couple chapters every night and it always leaves my son wanting more. The characters, adventures, and beasts have truly captivated his imagination and he often incorporates Beast Quest stories into his imaginative play.

Knowing your writing audience and purpose is essential for writers & the key to better writing

As an experienced conversationalist who has been wielding verbal words since toddlerhood, you easily move from one group of people to another adjusting your tone, your vocabulary, and your syntax accordingly. Often without thinking about it, you speak differently to your parents than you do to your teachers and differently from both groups when alone with your friends. You would not dream of using the same speech patterns in the locker room and the church sanctuary.

Knowing Discourse Community

Most writers understand the concept of audience and why it is important to understand who their audience is when composing. Yet simply understanding the "who" of your audience is only the beginning for experienced writers. Effective writing, writing that works and delivers the intended message and effect, must fit within the discourse community it is destined to serve.

In my opinion, the easiest way for LeeAnn to test whether or not she is pushing her daughter can be found in this quote: "Is it too soon, or should I let her keep going as long as she is interested and is having fun?"

If LeeAnn's daughter is interested in the concepts that she is learning and having fun while learning then it is definitely the right time to teach her.

Why we should write love letters...

My family said good-bye to my Mother-in-law this weekend and at her Memorial Service several people shared wonderful stories about her. How much more meaningful would it have been to share those stories and thoughts when she was still alive?

Learn more about writing your own love letter @ http://www.squidoo.com/learn-how-to-write-a-love-letter

Amplify’d from www.squidoo.com

How to write a love letter

Writing a love letter is hard -- even for professional writers -- precisely because there is so much at stake -- or at least the fact that we perceive there is so much at stake. In reality, if we are truly in love and in a committed relationship that relationship is not at stake, but spending a few hours agonizing over a blank piece of paper or computer screen can make it feel like it is!

So, if writing a love letter is so very difficult then why do it?

  • We need to tell our loved ones how we feel about them. Often we throw around a quick and easy "I love you" without thinking when we say good night or good bye, but when was the last time you really told the most important people in your lives how you really feel about them?

  • Love letters are easy on the budget. So many commercial Valentine's Day gifts are expensive but ultimately a lot more meaningless than a personalized love letter.

  • Love letters are easy on the environment. If you create a digital love letter then it is really easy on the environment but even a paper one can be pretty environmentally friendly -- especially if you use recycled paper.

What is the difference between technical writing, business writing, and professional writing?

I have worked as a professional writer my entire adult life (let's just say that's a couple of decades and leave it at that) and I expect to complete my Ph.D. in Technical Communication and Rhetoric in May.

Ever since I entered my Ph.D. program at Texas Tech I have struggled with the answer to that question. Sometimes you see people use the terms interchangeably and sometimes you see people draw hard lines and build big heavily-defended walls to separate the two (with any attempt to cross the border considered an act of war).

http://www.squidoo.com/business-writing

Amplify’d from www.squidoo.com

Business Writing & Technical Writing

Many people see business writing as the type of writing you do in the business world, professional writing as people who write for a living (say like journalists or copyeditors and not to be confused with just plain writers which is the typical name given to those who write novels), and technical writers as people who translate science and technology into human language the rest of us can understand. Sure it sounds simple until you start actually studying all the different kinds of communication that takes place today and look at all the different people who are writing. One thing that the we can say about living in the communication age is that it has certainly empowered all sorts of people to become writers who could not have done so just a few decades ago -- and today those people have a wealth of tools and venues to share their work.

So where do we draw the line? Can you see how it can become a bit of a conundrum?

Do you want to find happiness in life?

Today's world is full of unhappy people. We see these unhappy people every where we turn. They are driving on the roads with us, shopping at the local grocery store, dining in our favorite restaurant, teaching in our schools, and working beside us. Happy Father's Day to my Dad!

This is not a day for celebration in our house. My husband does not feel much like celebrating as this is his first father's day without his father and we just lost his mother this week but I think my father enjoy his day as much as he could under the circumstances.

Gifts For 9 year old boy

What does a 9-year-old boy want for a gift?

My son Noah is 9-years-old going on 10 (Feb. 15) and I thought it might be useful to share some of the items on his wish list for those who have 9-year-old boys to shop for.

I have chosen to include things that he has asked for and some things that I know he wants but he didn't think to write down as well as some of his most prized possessions. Hope this helps with your shopping!

Noah is pictured here with his number one request last Christmas. He so wanted a dog and he did get one, just not for Christmas. Max joined our family just a few weeks after Christmas.
