Recommended reading: Geodyssey by Piers Anthony

I recommend that you read the Geodyssey series by Piers Anthony. These books explore through fictional vignettes the history and nature of humankind and how we came to be. He uses the same characters (although adapted to specific points in history) to illustrate the evolution of human development using a mix of history, science, and creative license.
