Well today is the last day of May and I can take a look at my progress -- which is neither as good as I had hoped it would be nor as bad as I feared it would be.
May was a terribly busy month for me including attending a two-week seminar out-of-state for graduate school so I simply didn't have the time to spend on Squidoo that I normally have so some of the time I feared it would be a very bad month indeed. In that respect May turned out better.
However I did refrain from starting as many lenses as I did last month and focused more on raising the level of my existing lenses. I did succeed in that but not as much as I had hoped. Perhaps that is simply a factor of not having much time or perhaps I'm going about things the wrong way. I guess we won't know until next month.
Total # of Lenses: 183 (+7)
Total # of Groups: 13 (+6)
Traffic is up:
May Daily Digest says: You have 183 lenses, visited 1,569 times in the last 7 days.
April Daily Digest (or my guess) says: Total Visitors = 1014, Average Visitors = 6
# of Lenses in the Top 2,000 = 9 (-1)
# of Lenses in the Top 10,000 = 29 (+10)
# of Lenses in the Top 20,000 = 24 (+1)
# of Lenses in the Top 50,000 = 100 (+27)
# of Lenses in the Top 100,000 = 41 (-11)
Total Number of Lenses & Groups = 196
I would have liked to see more growth in the top tier but only losing 1 isn't too bad. I'd also like to see more growth in that third tier. I'm fairly pleased with my progress in that bottom tier although it could be better.

Pursuit Of Happiness
The pursuit of happiness is one of the basic elements of human existence. We want to be happy. So why are so many people unhappy then? Most likely people are not happy because they are missing one of the six keys to happiness.

Making rhythm and rhyme a part of your child's life will have a tremendous impact on your child's speech, literacy, reasoning, physical, emotional, and social development. Simply introducing your child to preschool songs, preschool poems, and nursery rhymes can have a lasting impact on the way your child learns and develops.

I have always been fascinated by Abigail Adams. She was an educated and opinionated woman in a time when they were a rare breed and as the wife and later mother of a U.S. President she wielded tremendous influence over our country in its early years.

When, What & How To Teach Your Preschooler
Be your child's first teacher!
There are really only three things you should remember:
~ Keep it fun Making learning into a game and your child will always enjoys what you have to teach her.
~ Keep it light Educational products and activities that are actually games are wonderful but don't force your child into spending time each day with flashcards or the like. They'll most likely learn faster and more meaningfully if you have an alphabet scavenger hunt at the supermarket.
~ Embrace the teachable moment but don't schedule lessons and force educational activities on your child. When the opportunity presents itself (and it will countless times in a day!) take advantage and use it for a lesson. For example, simply putting on socks can be a lesson in right and left, colors, or counting!

Discourse Community
As an experienced conversationalist who has been wielding verbal words since toddlerhood, you easily move from one group of people to another adjusting your tone, your vocabulary, and your syntax accordingly. Often without thinking about it, you speak differently to your parents than you do to your teachers and differently from both groups when alone with your friends. You would not dream of using the same speech patterns in the locker room and the church sanctuary.
Most writers understand the concept of audience and why it is important to understand who their audience is when composing. Yet simply understanding the "who" of your audience is only the beginning for experienced writers. Effective writing, writing that works and delivers the intended message and effect, must fit within the discourse community it is destined to serve.

What is trivia?
The dictionary definition is: Insignificant or inessential matters; trifles
Trivia is the Roman goddess of sorcery, hounds and... the crossroads
Others think of trivia as interesting facts or useless information -- and sometimes both at the same time
In fact, trivia is the plural of trivium which means crossroads
I think trivia is fun, often intriguing, and always entertaining
Let me share my trivia with you!

Why FRONTLINE is important?
It is one of the few television news shows that actually incorporates reflective, in-depth review of important topics from political issues to health issues to financial issues.
FRONTLINE's reports not only report but also explore a topic fully and from every angle so viewers can fully understand the issue and its implications for our lives and future.
FRONTLINE helps its audience become more aware and educated about the important issues of the day so the public can be full participants in our democracy. FRONTLINE should be required viewing for every voter and taxpayer.

Who Is George Santayana?
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
This quote is from George Santayana's "The Life of Reason" which is widely considered to be one of the most poetic and well-written works of philosophy in Western history.
The Life of Reason, subtitled "the Phases of Human Progress", is a five volume book -- Reason in Common Sense, Reason in Society, Reason in Religion, Reason in Art, and Reason in Science.

I'm A Giant Squid!

I just received the news that I am one of the 40 new Giant Squids.
According to Megan, the Editor in Chief at Squidoo, the Giant Squids is a core group of movers and shakers on Squidoo. "It's a badge of honor for lensmasters who display rare talent for quality AND quantity in their lensmaking."
I am thrilled and honored and awed...and ready to get down to work.
I've updated my RWO Squidoo Stats lens to reflect my new status as well as my finishing April numbers.
While thrilled at my Giant Squid status I must admit I am disappointed with my finish for April and as May promises to be an extremely hectic month for me I don't imagine I'll be able to improve all that much.
Lessons learned from this month:
* I need to balance my lens creation with lens maintenance and promotion
* I need to slow down my lens creation
* I need to consider whether or not I want to abandon some of those low-ranking lenses or if I might be able to find the time to bring them up right (is it worth the time?)
* I need to balance my promotional efforts and spread them out over more lenses
* Creating groups is worth the effort -- witness the birth of the Cream of Squidoo group which has already gone as high as 17911 in its first month!
* I need to see a lens through when I create it and give it a solid chance at rising on its merit with at least a minimal effort at promotion
